The Lake District National Park aims to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the region and promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of area.

The village of Troutbeck is situated between the main tourist areas of Windermere and Ambleside, just off the Kirkstone Pass.  Troutbeck is a designated conservation area and contains a number of buildings which date from the 17th to the 19th centuries.  At the northern end of Troutbeck is a 17th Century inn "Mortal Man" and a delightful Clock Cottage.
