The village of Troutbeck is situated between the main tourist areas of Windermere and Ambleside, just off the Kirkstone Pass. Troutbeck is a designated conservation area and contains a number of buildings which date from the 17th to the 19th centuries. At the northern end of Troutbeck is a 17th Century inn "Mortal Man" and a delightful Clock Cottage.
