Scafell Pike in the Western Lake District is Englands largest mountain. At 978 metres (3210 feet) in height Scafell Pike is a magent for walkers eager to claim that they have stood on the top of England - Scafell Pike.
Haweswater is now one of the largest lakes in the Lake District and is the most easterly of the lakes. Haweswater and has no settlements on its shores. In 1929 a bill was passed by Parliament authorising the use of Haweswater as a reservoir for the city of Manchester. A concrete dam was built raising the lake level by 95 feet. As a result of the building of the Dam the villages of Mardale and Measand, and the Dun Bull Inn were pulled down. At times of drought when Haweswater water level is low it is possible to see what is left of the village of Mardale.
