In 1929 a bill was passed by Parliament authorising the use of Haweswater as a reservoir for the city of Manchester. A concrete dam was built raising the lake level by 95 feet. As a result of the building of the Dam the villages of Mardale and Measand, and the Dun Bull Inn were pulled down.
